I had been looking forward to “It” for quite some time. I think it was a couple of years ago when they announced they wanted to remake “It.” I never read the book, I’m not a big reader, but I hear its good. Currently, the movie is sitting at an 85% from critics and an 88% from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie made a whopping $123.4M opening weekend, so “It” is a hit. This will be a spoiler review, but I don’t want to go too much into reviewing the story and the plot points, I’ll just give you my thoughts on the movie.
Quick synopsis, “It” takes place in a town called Derry, Maine. This town has a dark history, people go “missing” here way more than the national average. We follow a group of young children as they are terrorized by Pennywise the evil murdering ballon carrying clown. “It” is directed by Andy Muschietti, stars Bill Skarsgard, Jaeden Lieberher, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, and Finn Wolfhard. Along with some other great child actors.
So I went and saw this movie last night, first time using my MoviePass card, I wasn’t sure if my theater would accept it but they did! Definitely will be using that way more often. (No we are not sponsored by MoviePass.) “It” has been out for two weeks now and the theater was packed. This movie has been getting great word of mouth. I usually don’t watch horror movies, because I scare easily and end up losing like a week’s worth of sleep, but I said fuck it and went for it.
So my thoughts on the movie, “It” was good. I wasn’t disappointed, the story was good, I would say it was more creepy than scary. There are a lot of “jump scares.” I didn’t find myself jumping or flinching much. Not that I’m some kinda badass or anything, I just didn’t get startled. The jump scares were at times unpredictable though, so I commend them on that. I would try to predict what was going to happen next, and it didn’t, something else way crazier happened. There were a bunch of high school kids sitting a couple of rows ahead of me it was funny to see their reactions.
I would say all the child actors did a great job, but the standout was Finn Wolfhard. Many of you may know him as Mike from Stranger Things. He acted as the comic relief and in my opinion, he stole the show. (I also didn’t know that his name was Finn Wolfhard, I just looked it up, what a badass name!)
In the beginning, I felt like they weren’t progressing the story really, it felt like a little bit of the story and then jump scare, jump scare, a little bit more story, jump scare, and jump scare. I guess they were just setting the tone. Also, all the kids see horrifying “hallucinations” but don’t really talk about it until like the middle of the movie. If I was a kid and I saw that, I would go around telling everyone, they would probably need a 5150 order to admit me. Little things like that would take me out of the movie every now and then.
Overall I thought “It” was a good movie, not as scary as I thought it was going to be but I still had fun watching it. There was a good crowd in my theater and people had great reactions to the scares and the humor. If I was to rate it I would give “It” a 7.5/10. A fun watch and a good time at the movies.
At the end they reveal the full title of the movie, “It Chapter: 1”, I think in “Chapter: 2” they’ll be adults and returning 27 years later to face Pennywise again. Definitely looking forward to that!
